Standard 6 food and dining reviews

Standard 6 doesn't stop at the kitchen door.

Independent onsite reviews and workforce training that connect Standard 6 requirements with what actually happens in your kitchens, dining rooms and at the resident's table.

When providers call us

Ahead of a quality assessment, after a complaint or incident involving meals, with a new catering contractor or menu cycle, or when a new manager wants an independent baseline.

From kitchen to resident

A policy describes what should happen. A review shows what does.

01

Kitchen

Production, recipes, texture modification and how dietary information reaches the cooks.

02

Servery

Plating, labelling, temperature, presentation and the point-of-service checks that catch errors.

Our reviews follow selected meal journeys, examining whether residents' needs, preferences and clinical recommendations are accurately communicated and delivered across kitchen, care and dining teams.

03

Care and Dining

Tray service, timing, assistance with eating and how care and kitchen staff hand over.

04

Resident

Choice, dignity, enjoyment and whether the right meal arrives.

The resident does not experience the policy. They experience the system that delivers the meal.

What we examine

Informed by all four Standard 6 outcomes, seen from the floor.

Outcome 6.1

Partnering with individuals on food and drinks

How resident preferences, feedback and menu input shape what is served.

Outcome 6.2

Assessment of nutritional needs and preferences

Whether documented needs and clinical recommendations reach kitchen and care teams intact.

All four outcomes of Standard 6: Food and Nutrition shape how we review. The services, areas and practices we observe are agreed with you when the review is scoped.

We don't replace your dietitian or speech pathologist. We look at whether their recommendations are understood, communicated and delivered consistently.

Outcome 6.3

Provision of food and drinks

Food safety, menu choice, IDDSI practice, presentation, snacks and hydration.

Outcome 6.4

Dining experience

Dining environment, assistance with eating, staffing at mealtimes, dignity and social connection.

Separately scoped

03. Standard 6 Verification Visit

A return visit, scheduled by agreement around your improvement plan.

Best after either review, to check progress.

Every review starts with a short conversation and a pre-visit information request, and ends with a verbal debrief before we leave. Scope is set around your home: its size, dining areas, workforce and priorities. Multi-site programs are available by arrangement.

Includes

Selected meal-service observations, kitchen and care hand-offs, tray service and dining support, targeted checks and conversations with key staff.

Broader mealtime observation, kitchen–care–clinical communication, selected systems and documentation review, and targeted face-to-face workforce training.

Includes

Re-observation of priority areas, a check of agreed actions and a conversation with the people who own them.

You receive

A short summary of progress against agreed actions and any remaining gaps.

What you receive

Findings your team can act on, not a report that sits in a drawer.

Example finding · Illustrative operational scenario

The meal was delivered. But was the dining experience?

A Standard 6 review looks beyond whether a task was completed to whether the resident received the intended outcome.

01 · Observed practice

Meals reach residents who need help with eating before care staff are free to assist. Meal delivery and assistance are not consistently coordinated between catering and care teams.

Our method

Observe.

02 · Risk and implications

A correctly prepared meal may sit untouched or go cold while the resident waits, putting nutritional intake, dignity and satisfaction at risk, even though the kitchen has done its job.

Time in the kitchen, servery and dining rooms, seeing services as they actually happen.

Every finding moves from what we saw to who owns the fix and how you'll show it's working. Here's how a single finding is laid out.

03 · Priority action and owner

Catering and care leadership agree a coordinated mealtime process that aligns meal delivery with available assistance and defines who supports each resident.

Diagnose.

Findings tested against Standard 6, IDDSI and food safety obligations, then prioritised by risk to residents.

04 · Verification

The provider checks later meal services, comparing delivery and assistance times and reviewing resident feedback. A separately arranged CCG Verification Visit can confirm progress if required.

Rebuild.

A clear, staged plan your team can own, with the training that helps change stick.

Who leads the review

Experience that understands both the kitchen and the dining room.

Reviews are led by Lindsey O'Grady, founder of Culinary Care Group. A career chef with roots in classical hospitality, Lindsey brings specialist knowledge of Australian residential aged care food services, IDDSI and workforce development.

Every review is an independent assessment, without a predetermined operational or product solution. Recommendations are built around your workforce, equipment, layout and residents.

Let's talk
